Headaches vs. Migraines

Headaches can take on many types of pain quality.  Dull, sharp and throbbing are some of the qualities you might experience.  Migraine is a subtype of headache disorder.  Another subtype of headache is muscle contraction headache.  Though there are other forms of headache, these are the most common types of headaches. The two conditions are differentiated based on their causes, types, and symptoms. Migraine tends to be more intense or severe than a muscle contraction headache and is one of the leading causes of disability among Americans.

Types of Headaches and Migraines

Headaches are classed as primary and secondary. Secondary headaches are linked to an underlying condition such as cervical injury or subluxation. Primary headaches include:

  • Tension (or muscle contraction) headache
  • Cluster headache
  • Migraine headache
  • Sinus headache

Tension headache is the most common type and is usually triggered by stress, hunger, medication, neck strain, and hormonal changes. The hallmark sign of a tension headache is a squeezing sensation around the head.  This is a very characteristic pattern of headache location.

The types of migraines are headache with aura and headache without aura. Aura means warning sign of imminent headache that occur approximately 10 to 30 minutes before a migraine pain event. Signs include sensitivity to light, sound, or taste, nausea, and vomiting.

Neck Injury Headaches

Cervicogenic headache is a secondary headache caused by referred pain from the cervical spine. This type of headache is often linked to excessive stress or tension to the neck from poor posture. Other causes include whiplash, herniated cervical disc, osteoarthritis, or pressure on the nerve or soft tissue in the neck. Symptoms include stiffness, blurred vision, and sensitivity to light.

Headache and Migraine Treatment

Headaches are diagnosed through a physical exam and evaluation of your symptoms and medical history. We may request a neural exam, X-ray, MRI, or CT scan before deciding on a course of treatment.

Cervical adjustments provide an effective drug-free way to alleviate symptoms of most tension headaches, migraines, and headaches directly associated with the spine. Adjustments are performed using manipulation or mobilization techniques to realign the spine, improve joint restrictions, and take the stress off the nervous system.

Your chiropractic care plan will be formulated based on your needs and may include corrective exercises and relaxation techniques to help relieve muscle stress. Our chiropractor may also give you advice on proper posture, diet, and nutrition. This natural approach to relieving chronic headaches and migraines helps reduce dependency on medication.
